Our surgeons Twittering..?

I had an interesting talk with my Dr. at my appointment this week. Here at home we were doing research on using Twitter and Facebook as social mediums for business (it's for an article) and I know that my surgeon recently started doing a radio ad that hits the Boston listening area, so I was curios what his thoughts were on him having a facebook fan page or Twittering. If businesses do these things correctly it can reach a generation of people that aren't listening to the radio and don't read print ads. He was very curious about it, but he said the reason he hasn't done it yet is because he didn't want potential or current patients to be put off by it, or think it is in poor taste. I guess I am unique in this because I don't think that at all. He asked me a favor and would like me to ask my fellow banders their opinion, what would you think? I don't know how many of you even Twitter, but would that upset you if your surgeon Twittered..? Kind of a random topic, I know..

Also at this appointment we were discussing my "sweet spot". I did very well on the weight loss front, but I explained to him that after my last appointment 1 month ago, I felt amazing restriction, I was doing very well, feeling pretty satisfied and still losing, but after about the 2nd week or so, the restriction started to change, and so did my appetite, so for the last week and a half or so before my appointment, I was struggling starting to see a bounce effect on the scale.
He explained that I should have called to get in for another fill at that point, especially because I noticed the change immediately, and he said the reason that happens is because I did have a good weight loss, and as you lose weight, the band does start to release a bit..it was something to do with the fat in the stomach.

So I thought that was interesting.

I have been trying to start an organic veggie garden with seedlings, but there is a particular little field mouse that is munching on some of the little sprouts, and he is particularly fond of my broccoli! The garden is all tilled and ready to go, I am just going to wait a few more days I think in case of any frosts.

Well..I hope everyone is doing wonderful and have a good day :)

  1. Girl, I have missed your posts! 50 pounds!!!! You are totally rocking this band. Now onto your question, I don't twitter, but think Facebook is great. I think it really does reach a whole different audience. I personally have joined 2 lap band sites on FB and think it's a great way to exchange information. Take care, I'm ready to see some -50 pics

  2. 50 lbs?!?! Fabulous!

Tell your doctor to do it! He'll be glad he did. It's only in poor taste, if what he's saying is. Other than that, it's what is going to happen anyway, and if he's smart, he'll be one of the first, and it will hit HIS sweet spot...

  3. first of all, great job on the weight loss! yay you!
as far as the twitter/facebook thing goes i think it's great if they do. i don't twitter, but i do facebook. it is a different demographic and would give the doc an opportunity to reach patients he wouldn't otherwise.

  4. CONGRATS ON 50!!! I think Twitter is a good idea, but it's all about the content. If he uses it to post tips to current patients that would be great. Not sure how much of his time it would take, and I guess he'd have to see how it works if patients try to ask him questions about their specific situations rather than coming in for an appointment. I guess coming up with a set of guidelines would help.

  5. I agree with Kristin. I think people who use Twitter and other social networking mediums are pretty tuned into what is an ad and what is 'news you can use'. But I'd like for my doctor to be on Twitter, FB or even just give out an email address! It would be nice to not have to get all my questions answered by going into the office. Or even if the P.A.s just gave out their email addresses. That would be terrific.

  6. 50 is amazing!! Congratulations!! On the Twitter thing, I think it could be OK, but only if your doctor is very careful about what he posts. Things like helpful hints, good food suggestions, encouragement to exercise, etc. could be great.

But. . not sure if you watch Nurse Jackie, but there is a doctor on there who they make look ridiculous because he is constantly Tweeting. I guess in some ways, Tweeting seems a little un-serious to me, so he should be careful to keep it professional and focused.

  7. I agree with what the ladies are saying. The content has to be appropriate. If it feels like an ad I'm turned off. It's a medical procedure, not a get this quick scheme. Whenever I see a billboard for LB surgery with a stock photo of a woman that has never seen a fat day in her life I just roll my eyes.

  10. My doc is on Facebook and I LOVE it! He asks fun questions and it's neat to see the feedback. Last week he asked what the nastiest, most atrocious example of a fast food item would be. Some people said the "double down" from KFC, but then I mentioned the Quadruple Bypass burger from the Heart Attack Grill and it was all over. :-) Anyway, I relly love talking to my doc as a person on Facebook, and not just the guy in the white coat that I see once a month for checkups. It's also great to have a way to connect with fellow patients locally.
